The Nephilim: Satan’s Seed from Creation to the Great Tribulation

The idea of aliens, giants and mysterious monolithic structures has become popularized. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Biblical text tracing the seed of Satan, namely the Nephilim, and Rephaim. These are possibly the basis of the Greek Gigantomachy, which was condemned by the Risen Christ as Satan’s Throne, both genetically and spiritually. Two ancient sites, the Pergamon Altar in Berlin, as well as Rujum el-Hiri in the Golan Heights in Israel, will be included to demonstrate the possibility that these “fallen ones” may be loosed upon mankind during the time of the Great Tribulation on earth. The understanding of the geography, biblical text and the cosmological significance of the area of Transjordan, and specifically “Bashan” in the Bible, give valuable understanding to what Jesus expressed:
“And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.”1
The Seed of the Woman (Messianic Line) Versus The Seed of Satan
Most Biblical scholars take pains to trace the bloodline of the seed of Messiah through the Tanaach (Old Testament) and its fulfillment in the New Testament. But Satan also has a seed. In the first Book of Moses, Genesis, the origins of the earth and the creation of man are explained. Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden and fell into sin. God proclaimed a curse on Adam, Eve, and the creation, then particularly to Satan. God gives a Messianic prophecy against Satan of what was to come in Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” Just as the Messiah would one day fatally destroy Satan, the text also states that Satan will have seed and try to damage or interfere with the seed of the woman. Just as Messiah had to come through Adam, Abraham (Gen.12:1-3), Isaac (17:8), Jacob (28:13-14), Judah (49:10), and King David (2 Sam.7:12-13), so also Satan has a seed. It has been Satan’s goal from the beginning of the fall of mankind, to destroy the bloodline of Messiah, as well as the Jewish People and finally the human race itself. If the Messiah was the promised seed to deliver mankind, then who are the seed of Satan?
The Days of Noah: Genesis 6
“Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” There were Nephilim2 on the earth in those days, and

2 also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore
children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”3
In the days of Noah, “the sons of God” went into the daughters of men. This term in the Tanaach refers exclusively to angelic beings.4 It was the “sons of God” who had to give account to God, including Satan himself, in the first chapters of Job. These angelic beings are called sons of God because they were directly created by God Himself and worked in his presence in the heavenlies. These beings are translated “giants” in the text, but literally they are “fallen ones” or “Nephilim” in Hebrew. These fallen ones mated with women and bore children (v.5). The product of these angelic fallen ones and their offspring are called giants, and other names, which will be seen later: Gibborim, Rephaim, Zamzumim, Emim and Anakim. These hybrid peoples could not be redeemed from sin because angels could not be redeemed. Also, Satan had already begun to interfere with the bloodline of the “seed of the woman.” God would destroy the inhabitants of the earth, who were genetically being corrupted by the “sons of God.” These were violent and wicked and God was sad that He had created the earth.
The text explains that these were the heroes of old, men of renown, or (Heb. men with a name). In addition, many cultures have a mythology of great gods, titans and giants who struggled against one another in the early years of mankind. Most familiarly and prominently, these would be the Greek Gigantomachy, comprised of gods, and powerful half-breeds such as Hercules, and Achilles.
God finds a man named Noah, who was godly and even more important for that time, was genetically pure5 in his generations. This would include his three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, who accompanied him on the ark and became the fathers of all peoples of the earth. But this genealogical purity would not necessarily include the wives of these men. They would likely have carried some of the genetic hybridization that is seen later in the biblical text. The fallen angels, who came to earth, were destroyed in the flood and these Nephilim have never again mated with the daughters of men since that time. According to Jude 6, “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.” But their offspring are giants after the flood. How did this come to pass?
The Descendants of Ham and the Curse on Canaan
After the flood, Noah and his children multiplied on the earth. Shem and Japheth were godly sons and loved God like their father, but Ham was different. Noah became drunk with wine and Ham looked on his father’s nakedness and told his brothers outside.6 There is no evidence that Ham repented of his behavior and the text is ambiguous as to the nature of the act. Noah puts a curse on Ham’s youngest son Canaan, to be a servant’s servant to his brothers. It is through the line of Ham, and especially Canaan that the Biblical giants originated. These became the nations that God commanded Israel to utterly destroy during the conquest of Joshua. While some may think that this was a harsh, cruel measure, God was

working to ensure that the Messianic line would stay intact, as well as the rest of mankind. Here are the generations of Ham (Gen.10) with yellow highlighting those of Scriptural notable mention:
Ham seemed to be in disobedience with his father, and perhaps there was physical evidence already that Ham’s wife’s children were hybrids. Ham’s grandson through Cush, was Nimrod, who was a “Gibbor” (same as Gen. 6:4) and led the world to build Babel to become like God through building a tower. His name in Hebrew means “rebellious one.” The Philistines were descendants of Ham’s son Mizraim. They were notorious giants even up until the time of David, as the story of the battle against Goliath relates. During the conquest in Joshua’s day, Israel was to destroy the numerous clans of Canaanites.7 Many of these clans were giants.
The Rephaim and the Transjordan Tribes
In Genesis 6, the fallen angels were called Nephilim. These were destroyed during the flood. Their DNA seemed to come through one or more of the wives of Noah’s sons and were giants. Their offspring are called Rephaim (Rafa-singular) or Rephites in the Bible. In Hebrew, the root רפא can refer to “shaded ones or spirits” or another meaning of the root can be “healing.” In the context of the geographical Old Testament, Rephaim were clearly giants, who lived in the areas of Transjordan, Hebron in the Judean Hill Country, and the Philistine cities. These men were of great stature and were not as our concept of giants today, who are weak, and recessive genetically. Imposing in strength and height, they were associated with violent rebellion to God.

The earliest reference to Rephaim/Rephaites in the Biblical text begins with Abraham, who fought the invading Kings of Mesopotamia to save his kidnapped nephew Lot. As these kings swept through Transjordan from north to the south of the Dead Sea, the text gives a valuable understanding of the different names given to the giants, who inhabited Transjordan:
“...Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.”8
These giants and clans were called Rephites (Rephaim), Zuzites (Zamzummim), Emites (Emim) respectively. Five hundred years after the time of Abraham, Moses and the children of Israel came up to Transjordan to enter the land of Canaan. The giants still inhabited the land and the text gives a valuable understanding of their regional location:
“The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. They were also regarded as giants, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim. The Horites formerly dwelt in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their place, just as Israel did to the land of their possession which the Lord gave them.”9
“That was also regarded as a land of giants (Heb. Rephaim); giants (Heb. Rephaim) formerly dwelt there. But the “Ammonites call them Zamzummim, a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place.”10
God commanded that these clans be dispossessed and destroyed.11 In our modern world, it is difficult to accept this and indeed, seems like a sort of ethnic cleansing. But this strategic command by God was to limit and destroy the seed of Satan amongst His Chosen people, and then in turn, the rest of the world.
Sihon and Og- The Amorite Kings in the Time of Moses
Of particular relevance, the Biblical text uses Kings Sihon and Og as reference points of God’s victory over the wicked Rephaim on Transjordan. Sihon was king over the area of Heshbon near the Arnon River, and Og was king of Bashan up to Mt. Hermon (the modern Golan Heights).12
“For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the giants (Heb. Rephaim). Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not in Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit.”13

A standard length of a cubit is eighteen inches, making Og about thirteen feet or four meters in height. Many additional Scriptures mention Sihon and Og as representative of God’s judgment in general14 and over the curse of Canaan specifically.15 Sihon and Og represented God’s victory over the Rephaim in the area of Transjordan.
The Anakim of the Judean Hill Country in the Time of Joshua
During the Israelite conquest of the Judean Hill Country, twelve men went to spy out the land. Two of these were Joshua and Caleb, who brought back a report that it was possible to overcome the inhabitants.16 The others, however, expressed that they were grasshoppers in the site of the inhabitants and in their own sight.
“And they went up through the South and came to Hebron; Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there.17 (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.”18
The descendants of Anak were a race of Rephaim. They had built great and large fortified cities. God exerted severe judgment on these spies for bringing a bad report back to the people, because what was at stake was the preservation of human-kind. In addition, the mention of the oversized cluster of grapes may suggest a knowledge of biological engineering on the part of the Anakim.19
Caleb decides to take on the Rephaim as his personal mandate and asks permission to fight and take their area as an inheritance. In doing so, he destroyed the Anakim. “And the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).”20
Joshua’s campaign in the Land of Israel succeeds in destroying the Anakim. Rephaim had been destroyed in the Transjordan and now in the territory of the Central Hill Country of Canaan. The only Rephaim left were found in the areas of the Philistine Coastal Plain in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.
“And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.”21
Josephus, in his Antiquities of the Jews, describes how Joshua helped Caleb destroy the

Anakim. He reported that the bones of these Rephaim could be seen, even in his day in the first century CE:
“There were, till then, left the race of giants, who had bodies so large, and countenances so entirely different from other men, that they were surprising to the sight, and terrible to the hearing. The bones of these men are still shown to this very day, unlike to any credible relations of other men.”22
It is unknown what these differences of countenances were like, but the idea of “terrible to the hearing,” may be linked to the other appellation of the Rephaim as Zamzumim (Zuzim) in Transjordan, previously discussed. The modern usage of this Hebrew root means to “buzz, drone, him or whir,” indicating an unusual aspect to their speech, as well as their appearance.
The Rephaim of the Philistines in the Time of David
About four hundred years later, one of the most famous Bible accounts deals with the battle of David and Goliath, Israel versus the Philistine army. Goliath was a giant, one of the latest families of Rephaim on the coast. It was said of Goliath:
“And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him.”23
David truly showed how faith in the Living God would enable God’s plans and purposes for humanity to progress. Goliath was part of a clan of giants who were infamous during the Iron Age of Israel. Born of the Rephaim, they were called Gittites because they were clustered around the city of Gath. David and his mighty men went to war against them on a number of occasions. Here are the names and descriptions of these Rephaim according to 2 Samuel 21:15-22:
1) Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the children of the giant (Heb. rafa), the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword.
2) Saph, who was one of the sons of the giant (Heb. rafa)
3) The brother of Goliath the Gittite: the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
4) At Gath, there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant (Heb. rafa).
In summary, over a period of one thousand years, from Abraham to David, God orchestrated the protection of Messiah and mankind from the seed of Satan, which was biologically

transmitted through the sons of Ham and particularly through Canaan. This took great courage and faith in God by those who rose up to fight people who were of enormous size and strength. While seemingly harsh, perhaps this was a main reason that God sent Abraham into the land of Canaan in the first place, not only as the offspring of Seth to preserve the Messianic seed but in turn, to protect the human race from hybridization with Satan’s seed. God executed absolute judgment over the seed of Satan through the Rephaim. All their offspring were to be destroyed. These giants had many names, depending on which territory they claimed.
Through the Israelite conquest of Moses, the giants of Transjordan were dispossessed first. Sihon and Og were particularly important in the Biblical account, and held up as an ongoing record of God’s dealing with Satan’s seed. The giants were called by different names such as Gibborim, Rephaim, Zamzumim, and Emim. They were of superhuman size and strength, and had genetic features to identify them, such as extra fingers and toes, unusual countenances, and different sounding speech. There were likely other features as well. During the time of Joshua and Caleb, the clan of Anak were dispossessed from the Central Hill Country of Canaan, notably Hebron, or Kiryat Arba. Finally, King David drove the last Rephaim out of the Philistine plains. It is important to note that these clans of Rephaim were in total rebellion to and cursed God, were engaged in various practices of idolatry and occult. Not only were they the seed of Satan from of old, but also in spirit. They seemed to possess wisdom from of old and knew about genetic manipulation. The biblical narrative suggests that the clans of Rephaim were finally destroyed by the Children of Israel.
God’s Holiness and Views Regarding Genetic Hybridization
In this modern age, regarding the practice of hybridization, it is important to revisit how God views the purity of everything “after its own kind (species).”24 This included plants, animals, birds, fish and insects and most importantly, mankind. It was Noah’s job to make sure that each species was protected when he took these creatures on the ark, which is mentioned three times “in its kind” as an emphasis in Genesis 6:20. It was so that they “would live.” God wanted these animals to mate within their own species, which is why he provided two of each species.
When the angels came to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, the wicked men of the city wanted to have sexual relations with them.25 While this is usually considered as a homosexual issue, it may possibly have been an example of the attitude of the Nephilim. Perhaps these angels could have been tempted? It is gratifying that these angels understood the ramifications in the sight of God and did not participate.
During the time of Moses, the sacrificial system was in place. God was concerned about keeping things pure in His sight as a Holy God. He did not want the Israelites to be as the other nations and to set them apart from those who were influenced by the cultures of the Rephaim, who practiced genetic modification, idolatry and the occult.

The life is in the blood.26 Life as we know it physically, as our core essence, is through our DNA and our blood. God prohibited that a man lay with a man as he would with a woman.27 He also prohibited men and women laying with animals; it is an abomination.28 They were not permitted to have relations with near family members29 and in modern times it is known that doing so can bring on a score of defects and health issues. The priests serving the Lord had to be without blemish.30 Animal sacrifices, without blemish, had to be presented to the Lord.31
“You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you.”32 Not only are the hybridization of human and animal species prohibited, but also the idea of mixed seed and clothing.
Mixing DNA would seem to be a dangerous concept, according to the millennia and the Word of God. Modern hybridization is based on the Darwinian thinking of evolution, that we are simply a composite of DNA, cells, and atoms, like that chair on which we sit each day. The Transhuman movement seeks to improve mankind through the mixing of nanotechnology and DNA. There are now Ligers (cross breeds of lions and tigers), zorses, (zeebras and horses) wholphins (whales and dolphins), and beefalos (cattle and buffalos). This biotechnology extends to growing human organs on or inside animals. Examples of this include growing human ears on rats33, or the stated “humanitarian” goal of harvesting human organs inside pigs.34

On another level, aside from planned genetic engineering, recent court cases reveal human chimeras. A chimera is a person possessing two different sets of DNA. It is thought that a chimera is a twin who absorbed the DNA of the second twin in utero, but this is theoretical.

The landmark case of Lydia Fairchild35, who could not initially prove that she was the mother of her children, gives an example of humans who have two different DNA’s co- existing in their bodies. The affected persons are identified by the finding of two populations of red cells36 or ambiguous genitalia37 and hermaphroditism.38 Often, chimeras also have two different colored of eyes. These amazing discoveries have launched further curiosity into genetic research.
If the life is in the blood, blood transfusions and organ transplants need to be re-evaluated in light of the ideas of God’s principles. In our age, we have far exceeded these Biblical mandates, which are not quaint stories, but rather the resonant concept that hybridization is compromising our world and a way in which Satan seeks to weaken the nations.39 As Satan sought to make himself like the Most High40, so mankind is emulating his pride. God set in place natural boundaries of procreation and species for a reason. Blood is sacred. The concept of mixing together differing species, was borne out of the Nephilim. Satan would seem to break down these natural boundaries.
Are the Mythologies of the Gigantomachy More than Mythology?
Throughout history, many ancient cultures have a folklore regarding gods, titans and giants. This phenomenon extends from Mezo-America, to Greece, Mesopotamia and also China. The finely honed Greek metanarrative has become an integral part of our Western culture today in art, architecture, astronomy and rational thought. The Greek narrative also has a bearing later in this paper concerning the risen Christ’s words to the Church at Pergamum in the book of Revelation. The Greek narrative resembles Genesis 6:4, “There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”
This collection is called the Gigantomachy, from the Greek word "gigantes," which is the battle fought between the Giants and the Olympian gods for supremacy of the cosmos. It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into detail regarding the Greek Gigantomachy, except to draw some shared ideas to the Nephilim, the Rephaim and their progeny. In both instances, there is a distinct hierarchal order. Those in Olympus lust after the beautiful women of the earth, as the Nephilim desired the daughters of men. There are hybrid beings borne of these relationships, who are endowed with extraordinary strength or size. They were whimsical and selfish and sometimes exceedingly evil. The Greek gods include Zeus, Apollo, Ares, Dionysius, Gaia (mother earth), Hades and Nike. Some of the personages are half man, half God such Achilles, whose mother Thetis was a sea nymph. There were many variations of bipeds, quadrupeds, winged creatures and humans. Examples of animal

In other accounts, the Philistines worshiped Dagon, who was half fish and half man.41 In the epic of Gilgamesh, the Girtablilu were half scorpions, half-men, acting as the guardians of the underworld.42
Perhaps these creatures were more real than we have previously accepted, since angelic beings were given unusual power. Genetic hybridization is a constant theme and there seem to have been some horrific combinations. It is possible that these creatures were responsible for the incredible violence upon the earth during the day of Noah, as will be noted in the next section. There is a strong correlation of this narrative to the New Testament, which will now be examined.
The Gigantomachy of the Altar of Pergamon and Satan’s Throne
Located in modern Turkey, the centerpiece of Pergamum was a temple-like structure, the Altar of Pergamon. It was of great proportion and dominated the highpoint of the Pergamum acropolis during the 2nd century BCE.43 Of note to our discussion is that the entire length, and stairway up to the altar, which depicts a Gigantomachy frieze, demonstrated the struggle of the gods and the giants, the offspring of Gaia, mother earth.
The dominating feature of a monument, which the ancients numbered among the Wonders of the World, the frieze surpasses in sheer magnitude all other Greek sculpture that has been preserved. It is more than one hundred and ten meters long, and is crowded with more than a hundred figures, in a relief so high as to be almost sculpture in the round. ...It is the most important monument of the Hellenistic Age.44
There are two main friezes, one with Athena and the second with Zeus, which are described as follows:
“Athena, battles a titan Alcyonus, pulling him from out of the earth. His mother on the other side is powerless to help him. She is afraid. The movement of Sculpture starts at top of Athena, her arm seemingly gently engulfing Alcyonus and then down to one of Athena’s snakes, which bites him on the chest. Then the movement comes down across his abdomen to his legs, and merges with his mother. Both are being subjugated while Athena is crowned by winged Nike. It is almost three dimensional,

dramas, deeply cut, deep shadows, movement counterclockwise around Athena’s shield as the center. There are several diagonals, adding to the movement. We get used to the white marble, but all of this was brilliantly painted. Zeus, like Athena, is balanced and in control, with the drapery of his clothes flowing around his legs as he battles three giants. He is king of the gods and has eagles (his symbol) and a trident at his disposal. He is turned to the giant on his right, on his knees and is about to vanquish him. What looks like a torch, are Zeus’s thunderbolts. There is parallelism balance, momentary excitements. The story of the giants was important to the Greeks... Up the stairs of the altar, to where the fire of Zeus burned, sacrifices were offered to him. The reliefs on the staircase high relief, resting their knees on the staircase. They flow out into our world. Drama moves into our space.”45

“Try to imagine a frieze... 200 feet long; 8 foot tall gods locked in struggle with giants and protruding so far out from their background that they practically constitute free- standing sculptures; a scene of biting, battering, chopping, crushing, involving also powerful dogs and lions, and with the snake-like tail-ends of many of the giants forming into heads that bite the gods in the back and leg... all this taking place relentlessly and unforgivingly.”46
Eumenes II, the Attalid King of the city state of Pergamum, built the city’s great library, only rivaled by the libraries in Alexandria and Antioch. Siding with Rome against the Seleucids, Anitochus Epiphanes IV ascended to the Seleucid Greek throne in 175 BCE. He desecrated the Jewish Temple during the Jewish Maccabean revolt. Antiochus set up the abomination of desolation by erecting a Statue of Zeus.47 This backdrop gives cultural context leading up to the time of Christ and Roman domination in the first century CE. The Revelation of John circa 90 CE to the Church of Pergamum is crucially important. The Risen Christ appears to John and gives instruction to the believers at Pergamum:

‘These things, says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.”48
Why did the Lord describe this altar as the “throne of Satan” and “dwelling of Satan?” His statement is remarkable. This paper proposes that it is because of the Gigantomachy and its relationship discussed previously to the seed of Satan, by the Nephilim and their offspring. People came to worship the gods of the Gigantomachy at this altar. A certain believer named Antipas was martyred on this site. The Orthodox Church of America, as well as the Serbian Orthodox Church49 described this harrowing time period of persecution against believers in Jesus of Nazareth:
“The temple priests turned against anyone who did not offer sacrifice to idols. Antipas began to turn the people away from their ancestral gods, demanding that he stop and offer sacrifice to the idols instead... the Pagan priests retorted that their gods existed from of old, whereas Christ was not from of old, but crucified under Pontius Pilate...The enraged priests dragged Antipas to the temple of Artemis and threw him into a red-hot copper bull, where usually they put the sacrifices to the idols.”50
Occult practices and rituals were performed at this altar. But there were many altars in the ancient world, so why is this one so different? There seems to be an element of sorcery attached to this monument because of Christ’s words. Sacred occult objects had demonic attachments to them and God forbade his people to collect these objects; they were an abomination.51 Whether a small hand-held idol, or an edifice, these were an abomination. In our world of museums and archaeology, perhaps it is not always wise to preserve antiquities, in light of occult practice.52 Over the centuries, each city-state or empire, which controlled the Pergamon Altar, became powerful. Many leaders over the centuries were captivated and driven by the idea of power and the Gigantomachy:

Octavian, (31 BCE) became Augustus Caesar of the Roman Empire, and designated the Pergamon Altar as the first imperial cult center to himself in the East.53

The Byzantines became the leading empire of the Eastern Church. The Altar lost its function, but they strongly fortified it against the Arabs.

Arabs/Ottoman Empire defeated the Byzantines and became a powerful force of domination during the 12th-13th CE. Then the Turks ruled until the mid 19th century.

The Germans, under the Second Reich of Bismarck, dismantled the Altar, rebuilding it in Berlin. A German Engineer, Carl Humann (1878) brought the Altar piece by piece, housing it in a museum specifically built and named to house it. Kaiser Wilhelm wanted this to build up prestige of the German peoples to imitate the British Museum and their Empire.

Under Nazi Germany and the Third Reich, Adolph Hitler was greatly inspired by the Pergamon Altar, when the museum was completed in 1930. He commissioned an architect, Albert Speer, to build a similar structure, the Tribune at the Zeppelin Field for his primal night rallies. The Fuhrer’s pulpit was located at the center of this imposing structure. Albert Speer became Hitler’s architect.

After the Nazis were defeated, the Soviets took control of the Pergamon Altar on the East Side of the Berlin Wall in a post war Germany. The Red Army dismantled the friezes, and stored them in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Russia, during the height of the Cold War against the United States. The Soviets returned the friezes to East Berlin in 1958, while still under Soviet control. In the early 1990’s the Berlin Wall came down. Once again a reunited Germany became the influential head of European commerce and policy.

The Democratic frontrunner, Barak Obama, while running for President of the United States, came to a rally in Berlin at the Alexander Victory Column,54 a Nazi symbol in Berlin, while approximately 200,000 German spectators attended. Upon his return to the US, Senator Obama held a huge rally at the Denver Stadium.55 His platform was in the shape of the Pergamon Altar. He went on to win two terms as of this writing.
The motivations of those who built empires can be summed up by Robert Lipton’s interview with Albert Speer after the trials at Nuremburg:
“He (Speer) progressed to the planning of vast buildings, even cities, to extol the omnipotent Nazi regime, and above all, its Fuhrer. He emphasized how in becoming “Hitler’s Architect,” he was drawn toward a vision of personal immortalization, of “having a place in future history books, “building for eternity,” and in that way “someone who is surviving his own life.”56
In summary, the Gigantomachy and the stories they revealed, have been preserved through antiquity to the present. An example of this is the Pergamon Altar. The Risen Christ condemns the Pergamon Altar as Satan’s throne. This strongly suggests that the Gigantomachy was connected to the seed of Satan and to sorcery. This gives credibility to authenticate parallels to the Nephilim and Giants (Rephaim), which have been discussed earlier in this paper. Those espousing the ideas of grandeur and omnipotence have used the Pergamon Altar as a symbol to enlarge their imperial cultures, through violence and destruction, even up to recent times. Of particular note was Hitler’s extermination of the Jews of Europe, but this only “bruised the heel” of that nation who brought forth the Messiah (Gen.3:15). There are similarities to the “heroes of old,” like Nimrod’s desire to

build great cities and have renown as a “mighty one.” According to the Biblical texts examined so far, and specifically in Rev. 2:12-13, these are satanic motivations.
The Importance of Bashan and Mt. Hermon in Connection to the Nephilim
In Biblical sources, the area of Bashan was important as a nexus of the giant clans. East of the Jordan Rift, it extended from Mt. Hermon in the north, to the southern limit of the Yarmuk River on Transjordan. During the time of Abraham, the Rephite giants controlled Ashteroth Karnaim in the Golan. Nearly five hundred years later, during the Israelite conquest, the same city was controlled by Og, king of Bashan, another Rafa. This paper has already shown the Biblical significance of the destruction by God of Sihon and Og in Transjordan.
As mentioned previously, Jude, the brother of the Lord Christ, is concerned and reminds historically, a parallel with the judgment at the end of the age.
“And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”57
Discussion now moves to important extra-Biblical sources, primarily the Books of Enoch and Jasher, which are quoted by biblical writers.58 While outside the rabbinic tradition of canonical Biblical text, they are relevant to understanding the cultural and historical background of Bashan and the Nephilim. It does not mean that Joshua or Jude considered these books to be part of Scripture, but rather as instructive. Jude goes on to quote the book of Enoch:
“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’”59
The Book of Enoch presents the idea that all angels are “Watchers.” The only place in the Biblical narrative that coincides with that term is in Aramaic, when Daniel relates how “the Watchers, holy ones who came down from heaven” were given the ability by God to decree the transformation of King Nebuchadnezzar into a hybrid beast of the field to east grass, because he lifted up his heart in pride against the Most High.60 Usually, this is taken as metaphorical or allegorical, but what if it was supernaturally literal? Angelic beings have supernatural powers. Watchers, biblically, are angelical beings obeying the decrees of God.

The Book of Enoch relates that the leader of the disobedient Watchers/Nephilim, one named Shamyaza61, led a pact of eighteen chief Watchers along with two hundred other angels to go down to the earth, lusting after the daughters of men. The portal of these angels to descend to the earth was at “Ardis on Mt. Armon,”62 or Mount Hermon in Bashan. Chapter seven of Enoch describes how they began to approach the daughters of men, and with whom they cohabited, teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and
trees. In turn, these women produced giants (v.10), which grew to such great stature that they could not be fed by men and turned against them to eat them (humanity) instead. The creatures began to eat everything available including birds, beasts, reptiles and fishes (v.13- 14). The Nephilim taught people genetic engineering: “They learned this from their forefathers who taught the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord; and God saw the whole earth and it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon earth, all men and all animals.”63
Other Watchers/Nephilim taught forbidden knowledge:
“Moreover Azazyel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, and the workmanship of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of the eyebrows, the use of stones of every valuable and select kind, and all sorts of dyes, so that the world became altered. Impiety increased; fornication multiplied; and they transgressed and corrupted all their ways. Amazarak taught all the sorcerers, and dividers of roots: Armers taught the solution of sorcery; Barkayal taught the observers of the stars, (astrology). Akibeel taught signs; Tamiel taught astronomy; And Asaradel taught the motion of the moon, and men, being destroyed, cried out; and their voice reached to heaven.64 He has disclosed to the world all the secret things, which are done in the heavens.65
Because of his wickedness, to corrupt mankind, God told his angels to go and bind Azazyel hand and foot; cast him into darkness into an opening the desert, which is in Dudael. They hurled pointed stones to cover him with darkness, where his face would be covered, without light, forever. In judgment he would be cast into the fire.66
Where is Dudael? The Hebrew root of (הדד) in the Hebrew Bible occurs twice and may give a clue to the meaning of this place. Two meanings emerge simultaneously, as one who is sad and dejected67, and second, the act of walking deliberately in a procession to a common goal or space.68 The meaning, therefore, may represent the unfortunate procession of the incarceration of Azazyel into one of the places in the underworld.
In a similar fashion, Peter speaks to the time of Noah, and reiterates what God did with the Nephilim:

“That if God did not spare the angels who sinned, he cast them down to hell (chains of darkness) and delivered them into pits of darkness (Tartarus), to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly.”69
“He (Christ) went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.”70
God defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan, and gave their land as a heritage, a heritage to Israel His people.71 These Nephilim and their progeny are intrinsically bound to the area of Mount Hermon. Then continuing on into Psalm 68:16-18, a fascinating comparison is made between Mount Hermon and Mount Sinai:
“A mountain of God is the mountain of Bashan; a mountain of many peaks is the mountain of Bashan. Why do you fume with envy, you mountains of many peaks? This is the mountain which God desires to dwell in; Yes, the Lord will dwell in it forever. The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of thousands; The Lord is among them as in Sinai, in the Holy Place. You have ascended on high, you have led captivity captive; you have received gifts among men, even from the rebellious, That the Lord God might dwell there.”
On Mount Sinai, God gave Moses his Torah to the Jewish People. One greater than Moses arrived at Mount Hermon, and was the Seed of the Woman. The seed of the Serpent had failed. In triumph against the Nephilim, Rephaim and the Gigantomachy, on the way to Mt. Hermon in the District of Caesarea Philippi, Messiah asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”72

He was probably close to the site of Herod’s Augusteum Temple on the Roman road, which was nearby, now the ruins of Chorvat Omrit.73 Mount Hermon was filled with Roman altars, and in particular the cult worship of Pan, the lecherous half man, half goat, which was worshiped there. The Messiah, transfigured Himself in his full glory, on Mount Hermon, in front of His chosen disciples. Moses and Elijah conferred with Him there. This fulfillment of Genesis 3:15 is an unavoidable consideration of Messiah’s intentionality to choose that particular mountain. It was a moving picture of the work on the cross in Colossians 2:15 of Messiah’s “disarming rulers and authorities (and Nephilim); He made a public display of them, leading a triumphal parade over them through Him.74
Rujum el Hiri (Gilgal Rephaim) and Sorcery: Site in Bashan
In alignment with Mount Hermon, are the ruins of Rujum el Hiri in Arabic “Stone Heap of the Wildcat”, or in Hebrew, “Wheel of Giants.”75 It is a possible example of the work of the Rephaim and even possibly the Nephilim. Few people, including Israelis, are aware of, or have ever visited the ruin of Rujum el Hiri, or as it is called in Hebrew, Gilgal Rephaim. This ancient site, located on the Golan Heights east of the Sea of Galilee, was hidden until 1967, when the Israelis took the Golan from Syria during the Six Day War. Before the days of satellite imagery, from the ground, it is a heap of stones with over 37,500 metric tons76 of black basalt volcanic rock in concentric circles, with a central burial cairn. But from the air, it is an ancient monolithic monument in the shape of an azimuth, whose builders were adept at geometry, astronomy, and agronomy. It is the oldest ruin in the Middle East. Scholars have differing ideas77, some believing it is much earlier and part of a larger complex on the Golan dating to the Chalcolithic period.

Why is this five thousand year old structure only recently coming to our attention? Why haven’t tourists flocked to it like Stonehenge? Why is it important, to understand the present and future of the End Time events? According to the dating of Aveni and Mizrachi 3000 BCE +/- 250 years78, the ruin of Rujum el-Hiri had to have been in place, both during the time of Abraham and also of the Israelite Conquest.
Just as the Pergamon Altar had narrative significance of the heroes of old (Nephilim) to the Hellenists, so also too, Rujum el- Hiri would have had cult significance to the ancient giants, as well as to us today. It may likely be another edifice of sorcery. It displays refined features, such as two large equinox stones, both for summer and winter, a northeast entrance oriented to the summer solstice. Another entrance to the southeast is unknown for its importance. The northeast opening, if inversely extended to the southwest, aligns to Mt. Tabor and to the star constellation of Sirius. Mt. Hermon aligns due north of the structure. Radial walls inside of the concentric circles have been determined to have no structural use and conversely impede movement between the circles. Therefore, the radial walls seem to have astronomical purpose, pointing to some of the brightest stars appearing during the summer months. Even with all of this information, archaeologists really have no idea of the true purpose of this monolithic structure. Dating is not consistent. It ranges from the Chalcolithic Age to the Late Bronze Age. Scholars tend to agree that the original structure is earlier and that the burial cairn at the center, is of later origin.
Those who are interested in the New Age have become attracted to the site, especially during the summer solstice. Remnants of candles can be found inside the burial cairn at the center of the monument.79 A new generation of self-declared geobiologists describes the place as having levels of rising energy fields (Bovis units used by dowsers and geomancy) at each circle until a vertical chimney rises out of the center of the structure. Intersecting underground faults, and also watercourses, which run directly below the structure, are connected to energy. This thinking is based on magnetic fields, fault lines, and the use of mediums and spiritists.80 This should not be dismissed, but deserves consideration, demonstrating that the occultists and proponents of other forbidden sciences listed in Deuteronomy 18 are being attracted to the site, seeking spiritual significance there. Because of this kind of interest, it might suggest a portal to the underworld, which could be opened in the Last Days.

Apart from the geographical and archaeological, Rujum el Hiri may be Dudael, the heap of stones covering the sequestered place of Azazyel, one of the Nephilim from the Book of Enoch. The central burial cairn, of a later date, would have ceremonial significance to the Rephaim, and is possibly the burial place of Og of Bashan.81 The author agrees with Friekman, that Rujum el-Hiri is much older than the Bronze Age, and that archaeologists are not able to pin down the dating of the structure on it’s own. Rather, it should be taken as a larger complex of the Golan itself, in which the Chalcolithic structures sprang up in large numbers, including dolmen fields.82 But interestingly, there are no artifacts from this age, as if the area was a taboo zone.83
The Release of Abaddon/Apollyon Out of the Abyss
The Nephilim may be released back to the earth during the time of the Great Tribulation. Jesus Himself warned, that before his Second Coming, those days would be as the days of Noah. A number of verses in the Tanaach make reference and parallelism between Sheol and Abbadon. The root (אבד) in Hebrew is “to be lost” and is usually in context with perishing, or destruction. Sheol is a place of fire84and Abbadon is often paired together with it, as well as with death.85 They are described as never satisfied86, they are before Jehovah, how much more, then, the hearts of men?87 In Ezekiel, the uncircumcised Gibborim fell, perished in the flood and descended to Sheol, because of the terror they inspired in the land of the living.88 In Job 26:6, Sheol and Abbadon are written in synonymous parallelism, which indicates that they are one and the same. Some may argue that this is simply a literary device, which is partly true, but given the rest of the Scriptural text, this is more than a coincidence.
The oldest written narrative in the world, The Epic of Gilgamesh, refers to scorpion men who guarded the underworld.89 Gilgamesh is journeying to Mashu Mountain and wishes to find Ziusudra (Noah), travelling to the “wheel rim” to find him. Mashu Mountain reaches up to the sun god Shamash, and it’s base down to the underworld guarded by scorpion men. The location of Mashu Mountain is contested, many scholars describing the “Cedar Forest” of the text referring to the Lebanese Mountains of which Mt. Hermon is a part. Others propose that the Cedar Forest is actually located in the region of Kashmir.90
In Revelation 9:1-11, John the Apostle describes that when the fifth angel sounds, the bottomless pit, or abyss will be opened. Scorpion\locust men rise out of the pit and are given opportunity to sting and afflict mankind for five months with their tails, without killing them, so that they will beg to die. These beings have human heads, wings and tails of scorpions. An angel, their king, who is called by name, guards this abyss: “And they had a

king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”91
Because the Old Testament often fixes Abaddon and Sheol together, Sheol is the likely place referenced as the bottomless pit here in the New Testament. In addition, an angel named Abaddon guards this compartment. He is called Apollyon or Apollo in the Greek. Apollo was the sun god of the Greek Gigantomachy. Shamash was the sun god of Gilgamesh. It may possibly be the storage place of the Nephilim and hybrids that perished during the flood, as well as the departed souls of the dead. The portal of this release may be near the very place where the evil began, at Mount Hermon, and the azimuth or “wheel rim” description of Gilgamesh, with its Scorpion Men, specifically at Rujum el-Hiri.
Summary and Spiritual Ramifications
The seed of Satan, namely the Nephilim, were destroyed in the flood. Post-flood, the Rephaim were destroyed sequentially in Transjordan, the Central Hill Country and the Philistine cities. They descended from the line of Ham and the curse of Canaan. God initiated their destruction through Israel to protect humanity and the Messianic Line. God is a God who loves purity of everything “in its kind”, without genetic modification. Christ, the seed of the woman, transformed himself at Mt. Hermon and Bashan, to demonstrate his conquest over the Nephalim. The Nephalim and Rephaim form the basis of the Greek Gigantomachy, which was condemned by the Risen Christ. Satan’s throne of the Gigantomachy, at Pergamum, was an object of sorcery and source of domination through the millennia. Rujum el-Hiri in the Golan Heights, may be an occult portal to Sheol, where the Rephite king, Og of Bashan was buried, or a portal of these genetically altered “fallen ones”. As in the time of Noah, these may be the ones, led by Abaddon, to be loosed upon mankind to wreak havoc during the time of the Great Tribulation on earth. The creatures, before the Second Coming of Christ, may be more literal than once thought.
God has dealt differently with his creation through the ages. Before the flood the world was a completely different place, which was destroyed by water. The good news of today is that we are living in the age of the “Body of Christ,” or his Bride.92 This age began at Pentecost in Acts 2 and will end with the removal of His Bride, before the Great and Terrible Day of the Lord. In the light of the discussion of this paper, it is unlikely that He would subject his spotless Bride to partake of the wrath93 of that Great and Terrible Day, when the world will be destroyed by fire.94 This present age is unique in all the millennia because each person who believes is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and is His Temple.95 At no other time did God extend such a special work of grace. Those who believe in the Risen Lord may comfort one another with these words,96 and strive to bring as many people as possible to understand what will happen, before these events take place.
